Eagle Scout Lyla Janet's Inspiring Project
Lyla Janet
Lyla Janet is no ordinary Stillwater Area High School Senior. She is an Eagle Scout, her organization's highest honor, and her name is now etched on a brass plate at a brand-new trailhead/kiosk she created for Bird City Gardens at Mulberry Creek Bird Station in Stillwater. Tucked at the end of William Street North and bordering the McKusick Ravine, the Mulberry Ravine Bird Station is due to open to the public in 2026.
Lyla took a leading role in developing the impressive sign, which will welcome visitors to the bird sanctuary for years to come. This young Eagle Scout, from Scouting American Troop 7162, with no prior construction experience, supervised and built a permanent entry sign that stands tall at the Bird Station.
The journey from concept to construction was no easy task. Lyla and her team had to choose and prepare the site, including clearing debris and a fence; sink concrete footings; construct the structure from wood and metal; direct the helpers on what to do; and, in the process, learn new skills, like design, construction, and project management. Helped by her dad Matt, she collaborated effectively, leveraging everyone's strengths and abilities.
The glass display window is already in use with posts of our news, certifications, and information.
Thank you thank you thank you Lyla and Matt and all the wonderful parents and young people who helped!
